Antigua and Barbuda dismisses claims of Chinese influence

Apr 24, 2024

In response to a report published by a US magazine, the Antigua and Barbuda government has firmly rejected allegations that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nation has become a conduit for Chinese interests.

The report, authored by Newsweek Magazine, purported that China’s footprint in Antigua and Barbuda has expanded significantly, with implications for governance, diplomacy, and economic development.

China’s growing presence
Newsweek’s investigation underscored China’s deepening involvement in Antigua and Barbuda, pointing to various agreements and initiatives.

Notably, a January deal for a new Chinese “Special Economic Zone” raised eyebrows, with provisions for customs, immigration, and even passport issuance.
The envisioned zone, according to the report, would host a range of businesses, spanning from logistics to healthcare.

Government response: “Utter Nonsense”
Prime Minister Gaston Browne swiftly dismissed the assertions made by Newsweek, characterizing them as reminiscent of Cold War rhetoric.

Browne emphasized Antigua and Barbuda’s commitment to its longstanding relationship with the United States, stressing that any insinuation of jeopardizing this alliance is baseless. He underscored the mutual dependence between the two nations, particularly in tourism, trade, and investment.

A modern nation’s perspective
Ambassador Lionel Max Hurst, Chief of Staff in the Office of the Prime Minister, echoed Browne’s sentiments in a letter to Newsweek.

Hurst rejected the notion that Antigua and Barbuda is a pawn in China’s geopolitical game, emphasizing the nation’s sovereignty and pursuit of friendships globally.

He highlighted China’s track record as a reliable partner in development and refuted any parallels drawn between current US-China tensions and the Cold War era.

Rejecting cold war paradigms
Hurst admonished the tendency to frame international relations through a Cold War lens, emphasizing the evolution of global diplomacy since then.

He rebuked any insinuation that Antigua and Barbuda’s engagement with China poses a threat to US interests, citing the nation’s continued cooperation with the United States in various domains.

A call for nuance
Max Hurst urged for a nuanced understanding of diplomatic relations, cautioning against sensationalism and mischaracterization by the media.

He affirmed the competency of Antigua and Barbuda’s leadership in navigating international affairs and called for a departure from outdated narratives that hinder constructive engagement between nations.

By taking a staunch stance against allegations of undue influence, Antigua and Barbuda’s government aims to reaffirm its commitment to sovereignty and constructive global partnerships, while dispelling notions of geopolitical manipulation.
